Barangan

This is a word mutated from the original expression BARAZAN. Though there is a myth that this represents the Ganas which accompanied the party which brought the Deities from Nagve, the real meaning of the Barangan is shrouded in mystery. There are two leads which shed some light on this issue.

  1. According to Shri Olivhino Gomes the Barazan is a symbolic representation of the Podium which was used by the Gaonkars to dispense Civil and Criminal justice. They also decided on fiscal matters such as the Taxes/ Tributes to be paid to the King.
  2. According to Shri Anant Ramakrishna Shenoy Dhume, Barazan represents Dwadasha Ganas worshipped by the Sumerians. Sumerians who lived in Goa and carried on trade with middle-eastern countries were assimilated into the fold of the local Brahmin community long ago. Based on this it can be surmised that some of them may have been part of our group which founded the Temple in Nagve, thereby having a Barazan podium.

Over the years different connotations may have been given to this Podium. However, the second opinion carries more weight than the first.

This is situate at  south-westerly direction of the Temple complex and easily accessible from the rear entrance to the Temple complex. Coconuts are offered here during all Maghanes and President’s bhetis.
